Storytelling creates confidence in children: Deepa Kiran

Storytelling creates confidence in school children in a language class, expressed acclaimed story-teller Deepa Kiran at an event today in Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).

Children love stories and they learn a language through folk stories, noted the founder of Story Arts India. As a teacher, she said storytelling works in a classroom setting to teach the language.

“We can learn and teach a language through storytelling. As a teacher, I found it works”, the University of Hyderabad alumnus explained around 60 students of literature during her two-hour long lecture.

When asked about how to engage students of conflict and tribal spaces through storytelling in English, she suggested co-creating stories with the indigenous people.

The tall and blushing performer further explained heart-warming aspects of storytelling to the students, and showed them difference between storytelling and stories in movies.

Speaking about the program, Asst. Prof. G. Govindaiah said that it was part of extension lectures planned by the Department of English.

“We want to give real-time exposure to our students to learn from experts of the fields. The storytelling is an art we must learn and make use of in our lives,” the organizer noted.
