University of Hyderabad faculty becomes CSIR-NCL Director in Pune

Faculty member of University of Hyderabad (UoH), Professor Ashwini Nangiahas has been appointed as the Director of CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in Pune. He was associated with the School of Chemistry at UoH.

Established in 1950 at Pune, the CSIR National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) is a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and involves in science research, development and consulting.

Over the years, the organization has gained reputation internationally for its excellence in scientific research in chemistry, and chemical engineering. It has outstanding track record of industrial research.

Ashwini Nangia, who had masters degree in Chemistry from IIT Kanpur, established a research group on the synthesis of iridoid lactones, enzyme inhibitors and steroid analogues while working in the UoH.

For his PhD, he worked under Frederick E Ziegler at Yale University on the total synthesis of sesquiterpene natural products via a stereoselective Claisen rearrangement route.

Before joining UoH, Prof. Nangia worked in NOCIL Agrochemicals R&D Centre, Navi Mumbai for a year. He is currently Professor of Chemistry in UoH since 2002, and guided over 20 PhD students in the past 25 years at the varsity.

Prof. Nangia was Young Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He was awarded Raja Ramanna Fellowship by DST, and received JC Bose National Fellowship.

In addition, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and AP/TS Akademi of Sciences, Hyderabad.
