Let’s have Bhagmati-Qutb Shah story as part of our cultural life: Mir Ayoob Ali Khan

Let’s have Bhagmati and Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah story as part of our cultural life, remarked senior journalist and expert of history of Deccan Mir Ayoob Ali Khan while delivering a talk at Lamakaan on Friday.

Speaking on Legacy of Quli Qutb Shah, Khan said there were two different opinions exist about the famous Bhagmati-Qutb Shah story: whether it’s a legend or a real story?

Noted historian of Deccan Haroon Khan Sherwani called the story a figment of imagination, while Narendra Luther claimed that there was Bhagmati who hailed from a place called Chechlam, Khan expressed.

“I am of the view that we do not have proper documentary evidence on this subject. We might have scattered information and points of view,” opined Khan, who wrote extensively on the subject in Deccan Chronicle and Times of India in Hyderabad.

“We as people live on legends. If there are no legends, there are no people. If there are no legends, there are no nations. Therefore, let’s have Bhagmati- Qutb Shah story as part of our cultural life” he added.

Criticizing those who wish to remain uninformed their history, the senior scribe emphasized on the need to know and recall own history at least once in a while.

“If there’s no connection with the past, we become aimless, disoriented, and rootless,” he remarked while delivering the talk organized by Hyderabad Youth Mirror as part of its Fourth Anniversary celebration.

Further, Khan said numerous books have been written about the history of North India and love story of Jodha-Akbar but little is known about Deccan and the stories in this region.

“We talk about cosmopolitan culture. We talk about Akbar and Jodhabai. But we do not talk about inter-religious marriages of the kings, princes and princesses here in Hyderabad,” he remarked.

“During the Bahamani times, Bahamani sultans were marrying Vijayanagar princesses. Vijayanagar was a great empire in the south, which was competing with Bahamanis. We have information about Ibrahim Qutb Shah marrying a Vijayanagar princess Bhagirathi.”
