Congress’ Chalo Mallannasagar’ foiled, top leaders held

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at the Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday after police detained several Congress leader when they tried to leave for Medak district to meet the Mallannasagar project oustees, who were caned two days ago during a protest to oppose the project.

Police detained former union minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Leader of Opposition in Telangana Assembly K. Jana Reddy, Opposition leader in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, TPCC Working President Mallu Batti Vikaramarka, M. Sashidhar Reddy among others.

Congress leaders lodged a strong protest when police stopped the buses arranged as part of the party’s ‘Chalo Mallanna Sagar’.

Jaipal Reddy said there was no transparency in the manner in which the project was being taken up and the government is forcing the farmers to part with their lands.

The government took a unilateral decision and was using force to suppress the protests despite people resolving not to give their lands to the government.

Speaking on the occasion, Shabbir Ali accused the TRS government of being indifferent to the farmers. He said that instead of paying compensation according to the Land Acquisition Act 2013, the government was trying to implement its own GO 123.

He said there was no provision of rehabilitation and resettlement in the state GO. (INN)
