Chief Secretary holds tele-conference with District Collectors on heatwave condition

Hyderabad: As per the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar held a teleconference with District Collectors and senior officials of health, education and disaster management departments in the wake of severe heatwave conditions prevailing in the state.

The Chief Secretary observed that the daytime temperatures have started rising considerably in many parts of the State with the approaching summer. As the Met department has warned that temperatures would rise further in several districts of the state, he directed that schools should be closed early. The education department will issue necessary guidelines in this regard.  He directed the officials to initiate steps to sensitize people about the measures they should take to avoid the ill effects of heatwave conditions.  The movement of elderly people and children in the afternoon should be avoided.

 He directed the Medical and Health department to keep stock of ORS, fluids, glucose and other essentials in adequate quantities in all PHCs, sub-centers, schools and Anganwadi centres. 108 vehicles should be arranged if any person suffers heat stroke and hospitals should be on alert to admit the patient and provide necessary treatment

The Panchayat Secretaries and other officials concerned should conduct gram sabhas and publicize the do’s and don’ts besides setting up water supply kiosks at market yards, bus stations etc. NGOs and other voluntary bodies may be mobilized to run water and buttermilk supply centres.  The MNREGA timings should be adjusted so as to ensure that no worker suffers from heatwave conditions.  The fire department should also be on high alert.  Efforts should be made to ensure all amenities to children appearing for examinations in addition to prioritising maintenance of power to all critical facilities like hospitals and drinking water supply schemes. District collectors should prepare their district-specific heatwave action plans, Chief Secretary said.

All the departments have been directed to initiate an advance plan of action regarding preparedness, response, relief and mitigation measures to ensure zero human deaths due to heatwave.  Accordingly, awareness should be created on the symptoms of heatstroke and its consequences as also the precautions that should be taken. 

Secretary Education Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Secretary Health Rizvi, Commissioner Disaster Management Manick Raj, IMD Director Nagaratna and other officials participated in the teleconference. (INN)
