Secunderabad Railway Station’s 1952 building demolished for modernisation

Hyderabad: The historic main building of Secunderabad Railway Station, constructed in 1952, was demolished on Thursday as part of the station’s modernisation project.

Originally built in 1874 under the Nizam’s rule, Secunderabad Railway Station served as the headquarters of the Nizam Guaranteed State Railway until 1916. After nationalisation in 1951, a new structure, designed like a fortress in the Nizam-era architectural style, was built in 1952.

The station is now undergoing a Rs 720 crore redevelopment to transform it into a world-class transport hub with modern amenities. The renovation plan includes two G+3 iconic station buildings on the north and south sides, featuring retail outlets, dining halls, and recreational spaces.

For passenger convenience, the revamped station will have 26 lifts, 32 escalators, two foot-over bridges, a skywalk connecting Secunderabad East Metro Station, and an additional walkway on the northern side. To promote sustainable energy use, a 5,000-kilowatt solar power plant is also being installed. The project is expected to be completed within a year, providing world-class infrastructure and services. (INN)
