Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced that the state government will rename certain universities and institutions to avoid administrative issues arising from similar names in the two Telugu states.
Speaking in the state assembly during the presentation of bills related to SC categorisation, BC reservations, and the renaming of Telugu University, Reddy said that the government recently proposed renaming the Charlapalli Railway Terminal in Hyderabad after freedom fighter Potti Sreeramulu.
He noted that after Telangana’s formation, several universities were renamed for administrative convenience, honouring figures like Professor Jayashankar, Konda Laxman Bapuji, P. V. Narasimha Rao, and Kaloji Narayana Rao. Continuing this approach, the Congress government is renaming Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University after Suravaram Pratap Reddy, recognising his contributions to Telangana society. Suravaram Pratap Reddy was a journalist who published the newspaper Golconda and actively opposed the Nizam’s rule.
Reddy clarified that the decision to rename Potti Sreeramulu University was not intended as an opposition to anyone. He also announced that the Nature Cure Hospital in Balkampet would be named after former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, acknowledging his long political career and service to the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. A statue of Rosaiah will be installed near the hospital, and the government will officially observe his birth and death anniversaries. The Chief Minister further stated that he would send formal requests to Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, urging them to secure approval from the Centre for renaming the Charlapalli Railway Terminal after Potti Sreeramulu. He emphasised that these renaming efforts are not politically motivated but aimed at administrative convenience and honouring prominent figures. (INN)
