Teachers unions plan to organize a two-day Women Teachers’ National Convention in Hyderabad to fight for rights of women and children in the society. The convention will be held on November 22 and 23.

Close to 2,000 women from across the country are likely to participate in the convention, said Telangana’s United Teachers Federation (UTF) vice president Durga Bhavani.

She said that teachers working with private institutions would also attend the event scheduled to be held at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram in Bagh Lingampally.

Speaking about the purpose of the convention, School Teachers Federation of India (STFI) vice president B Samyuktha said that there was an urgent need to fight for the rights of women and children in India.

During the convention, issues related to women and children rights, working women, girl child education, women reservation bill, and others are expected to be discussed.

Women in unorganized sector have been subjected to harassment, atrocities and less paid in jobs, said Mrs. Samyuktha. She added that this needs to be changed, and nation must respect women’s contribution in the development of nation.

About 60% of teachers in private schools in Telangana are women, Mrs. Samyuktha informed while noting that they have been working on a relatively lesser payments.

She put forwarded a demand for recruitment of more women teachers in government school, especially girls schools to offer employment for the women and check atrocities on girl students.

Talking about Right to Education (RTE) Act, she said its implementation has been thrown to winds as no state government was implementing RTE more than 10%.

Criticizing the ruling government at the Center, she alleged that instead of focusing on quality education, it is concentrating on unnecessary issues and trying to inculcate a particular set of etiquettes followed by a particular religion via new education policy.
