Distribution of sub-standard sarees triggers protests

Hyderabad: Telangana Government’s decision to distribute sarees among poor women on the occasion of Bathukamma festival appears to have backfired as some women have registered strong protest complaining of sub-standard sarees.

While a few women burnt away the sarees they were given by the authorities, a few others conducted novel protest on Monday. A group of women set ablaze the sarees in Chilkal village of Jagitial and organised ‘rasta roko’ protest.

In Jangaon, women protested by cleaning the roadside vehicles with the distributed sarees. They alleged that by giving sarees worth Rs. 50 each, State Government have insulted all women.

In Bhongir, a group of women burnt the sarees and played Bathukamma around it. They said as against the promise of giving Pochampally sarees, they were given cheap polyester sarees of Rs. 50. Similar protests were also reported from Nandimedaram of Peddapalli district.

However, the TRS leaders dismissed the allegations of supplying sub-standard sarees and alleged that the Congress party had staged managed the protest using those women. (INN)
