Hyderabad: The dry run of the Covid-19 vaccine, aimed at understanding practical problems during the actual roll-out and resolving other logistical problems, if any, was carried out on Saturday at three government health facilities and one private hospital in Hyderabad.
The mock exercise to administer the vaccine was organized as part of the national dry run of the Covid-19 vaccine at Gandhi Hospital and two primary health centers at Nampally and Tilaknagar. Yashoda Hospitals in Somajiguda was the state’s only private health care facility chosen by the MOHFW to carry out the dry run vaccine.
In addition to testing the software of the Covid-19 Vaccine Intelligence Network (CO-WIN), the trained vaccinators also carried out mock administration of the vaccine to healthcare staff in primary urban healthcare facilities. In the mock drill, on average, 20 to 35 frontline staff were given the vaccine by each healthcare facility.
At Gandhi Hospital, the entire dry run of the Covid-19 vaccine was monitored by Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. K Ramesh Reddy.
So far, 10,000 public health employees have been qualified to provide or administer the Covid-19 vaccine in the state. Every qualified vaccinator would administer the vaccine to 100 people in a single day, working across the state to vaccinate 10 lakh people in a single day, Dr. Ramesh Reddy pointed out.
Senior health officials said that the state has discussed all the arrangements to ensure the involvement of cold chain management from the moment the vaccine vial begins its journey from the manufacturing unit to the moment it is administered.
The Oxford-Serum Institute vaccine, which has received a green signal from Indian regulators, can be transported at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius, unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which is licensed in the United States and the United Kingdom and involves a cold chain management of minus 80 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius.
On Saturday morning, at Yashoda Hospitals, the District Immunisation Officers (DIO) of Hyderabad also conducted the Covid vaccine dry run. The dry run of the vaccine was carried out by a team of doctors from the office of the District Health and Medical Officer (DM&HO) and DIO, which began at around 10 am and continued at Yashoda Hospitals for an hour.
The health authorities also consulted with the hospital’s health care staff and made them aware of the need to control individuals who received the vaccine for some form of adverse reaction for at least an hour. The mock vaccination drive was performed at Yashoda Hospitals for 15 health care employees. (INN)
