Hyderabad: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader S Jaipal Reddy passed away here on Sunday. He was 77. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Jaipal breathed his last at 1.28 am on Sunday at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Gachibowli where he was admitted about a week ago for high fever. He passed away at 1.28 am on Sunday and his mortal remains have been kept at his Jubilee Hills residence.
Jaipal Reddy started his political career as a student leader from Osmania University. He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly for four times and represented Kalwakurthy constituency between 1969 and 1984.
In protest against the emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he quit the Congress party to join the Janata Party in 1977. Later he joined Janata Dal.
He was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 from Mahabubnagar. He re-joined the Congress Party in 1999 and was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004 from Miryalaguda constituency and the 15th Lok Sabha in 2009 from Chavella.
He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha on two occasions from 1990-1996 and 1997-1998. He had also served as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha for a year from June 1991 to June 1992.
Jaipal Reddy served as the Minister for Information and Broadcasting in the IK Gujral government in 1997-98 and also under the Manmohan Singh led-United Progressive Alliance (UPA-1) from 2004. He also served as Minister for Urban Development and Petroleum and Natural Gas for the UPA-1 & 2.
Leaders from across party lines have expressed deep shock and pain over the demise of Jaipal Reddy. President of India Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narender Modi, Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Uttam Kumar Reddy and other leaders have expressed deep condolences.
KCR has decided to conduct the last rites of former Union Minister Late Jaipal Reddy with State honours. CM KCR has instructed the Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi to make necessary arrangements accordingly. (INN)
