Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to involve Self Help Groups of women to encourage them to take up stitching of cloth and Jute bags to curb the plastic menace.
GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy had an interaction with the members of women SHGs and informed them about the ban on below 50 microns plastic bags.
He said nearly one crore plastic bags were being used per day in the twin cities and now the same should be replaced with cloth or Jute bags.
The Commissioner said that the Urban Community Development wing has identified 68 Women SHGs to take up this project wherein the GHMC officials would impart training to the women on stitching.
Later, they will be provided loans through banks for taking up the project which will be helpful to them for their lively hood and also help the GHMC to curb plastic menace.
Janardhan Reddy said that the UCD wing is also preparing an action plan for marketing of the cloth and jute bags.
Additional Commissioners Sruthi Ojha, Siktha Patnaik and Bhaskara Chary, Banks Managers from Ranga Reddy and Medchel District, Zonal Commissioners, UCD Project Managers and Women Members of SHG have participated in the meeting. (INN)
