Candidates of Alliance for Social Justice (ASJ), a coalition of organizations in University of Hyderabad (HCU), won all major posts in Student Union Election this year.
Sreerag Poickadan emerged as the new president with a clear majority of votes, beating his rivals K Palsania of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Anju Rao of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
“The ASJ coalition of Muslims-Dalits- Adivasis-Left and other marginal students in HCU proved to be a viable model to counter right-wing forces in campus politics, said SIO Telangana president Layeeq Ahmed Khan.
The ASJ coalition included organizations such as Students Federation of India (SFI), Ambedkar Students Association (ASA), Dalit Students Union (DSU), Dalit Students Union (DSU), Tribal Students Forum (TSF), Students Islamic Organisation (SIO), Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika (TVV).
“I congratulate the newly elected members of the Union, which has a healthy combination of three Dalits, two Muslims and an Adivasi,” Khan noted.
The victory of the ASJ against people rallying behind and boasting about right-wing ideology gives a message that students at large haven’t forgotten Rohit and Najeeb, reflects Abdul Mumin, a resident of Hyderabad.
“I think the fight for justice for Rohith and Najeeb will get momentum and energy. Their names continue to shine and inspire”, Mumin added.
In this student union election, Lunavath Naresh (ASJ) won the post of Vice President with 264 majority votes. Beating ABVP’s Kiran Kumar, Arif Ahammed (ASJ) won General Secretary post with a majority of 408 votes.
Political science student Muhammed Ashique (ASJ) won Joint Secretary post, leaving behind his rival from ABVP Maloth Pooja Rani.
