Hyderabad: Reflecting the hopes and aspirations of Hyderabadis from the Metro Rail system, the Inaugural Plaza at Miyapur station is being shaped as a beautiful icon, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) authorities said on Sunday.
The inaugural plaza embodies the hoary heritage of Hyderabad and yet it sports a contemporary look. Unlike the other monuments which are generally fenced off, this one is being built as an open monument, accessible to all and be a ‘selfie’ point for the city.
To be unveiled by Prime Minister Narender Modi on 28th November, the inaugural plaza is located next to the entrance of Miyapur station in the vast landscaped greenery and public plaza being developed by HMRL between Miyapur station and the Metro Rail depot.
The three arches which are coming out of a water pond reflect the three Metro Rail corridors. Each arch is designed as a rail track which vanishes into infinity, signifying the future expansion of the Metro Rail system.
This arch form is taken to signify Hyderabad’s built heritage like Charminar and other monuments but with a contemporary interpretation. Since the arch is of steel, it’s material properties are expressed by way of a ‘floating’ design.
Of varying heights (14 ft, 18 ft and 22 ft respectively), the arches bear a dab of blue color which is HMRL’s dominant color and the stainless steel panels are the same as of the Metro coaches’ color.
The whole structure is being designed on an elliptical granite podium, with the oval shape signifying the closed loop system of Metro, explained HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy.
The unique features of the Hyderabad Metro and a comparison of the two iconic Railways viz., the Nizam State Railway and the Hyderabad Metro with significant impact on the history of Hyderabad are etched on the stainless steel arch panels.
Similarly, the financial innovation, the engineering excellence, advanced safety features, eco-friendly technologies, quality public spaces and the urban redesign and rejuvenation efforts of HMRL also briefly appear on the panels through stylized graphics.
The water pond below these steel panels which itself is at a good height from the ground adds to the structural form of the inaugural plaza, especially at night when the strip lights in the arches will be reflected in the water pond.
The inaugural plaque which is in the middle of the pond and in between the three arches will sport latest 3-D look rather than the conventional 2-D design, stated architect Shankar Narayan, who designed the inaugural plaza and other facilities at Miyapur with a lot of passion.
Cobble stoned granite podium adds a rich look to the plaza and will act as a differentiator from the ground level, enabling an alternate view point for the public.
The verdant landscape and lawn on both sides of the plaza will further elevate the ambience and will become another hotspot for people to congregate and relax there, averred NVS Reddy. (INN)
