Mallannasagar project oustees lathi-charged

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Erravalli village, where Mallannasagar project is proposed to come up at in Medak district, after police fired in the air and lathi charged farmers protesting over acquisition of their land by the State Government.

Few protestors were injured in the baton charge by police. Police opened fire two round in the air to disperse stone-pelting protestors. Those injured in baton charge include farmers’ representative.

The trouble began after people from villages were proceeding towards the Medak-Karimnagar highway for a protest. Police tried to stop the protestors but the villagers quarreled with the police which led to confrontation.

Meanwhile, Irrigation Minister Harish Rao has appealed to people and police to exercise restraint. He said people should not fall into opposition’s trap. The Opposition parties are backing the protest by farmers. (INN)
