Hyderabad: Led by Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC), leaders of all political parties on Friday staged a silent protest at Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial at Gun Park demanding that the State Government restore Dharna Chowk on immediate basis.
Speaking on the occasion, TJAC Chairman Prof. M. Kodandaram said that the State Government has remained non-responsive to various demonstrations being held across the city for the last one month seeking restoration of Dharna Chowk at Indira Park.
He said every individual has a right to protest under Article 19 of the Constitution. He urged the government not to violate this right under any circumstances. He warned that the TJAC would organise massive agitation if the government fails to restore Dharna Chowk by May 15. He also condemned hand-cuffing of farmers in Khammam.
TPCC President N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has accused the TRS Government of murdering the democracy by shifting Dharna Chowk.
He said that the government was trying to suppress people’s right to protest against its policies and decisions. Commenting on hand-cuffing of farmers accused, he demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao tender an unconditional apology with farmers for the act.
Telangana TDP president L. Ramana said that the Dharna Chowk was in existence for the last 20 years and various organisations used to hold agitation on different issues. By shifting the Dharna Chowk, he said that the TRS Government was trying to suppress people’s voice. (INN)
