Syed Sadatullah Husaini: A Non-Madrasa Leader to head Jamaat-e-Islami Hind

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) elected Syed Sadatullah Husaini, an engineer and non-madrasa leader, to head the organization for Term 2019-23.

In its meeting held in the first week of April in Delhi, JIH’s Council of Representatives voted Sadat to lead the organization. He is a resident of Hyderabad.

Before becoming president (Amir) of JIH, Sadat served as the vice president under Syed Jalaluddin Umari, and worked for the organization in various capacities.

Unlike many leaders of JIH who come from madrasa background, Sadat did schooling in an Urdu medium institution and later studied engineering from Maharashtra.

Sadat – Nationalism, Pluralism, ISIS

He had been vocal in expressing his opinions on a wide range of topics, including nationalism, pluralism, ISIS and teaching and learning.

Speaking during national and anti-national discourse, Sadat clarified that Islam approves loyalty towards the country, but not the sense of superiority, violence and injustice in the name of nationalism.

When lynching became rampant, Sadat not only suggested responsible citizens of the country to raise their strong voices against it but also reiterated that pluralism is India’s strength.

During global discourse on ISIS, Sadat out-rightly rejected it saying: “ISIS is a violent group which could be anything, but it has nothing to do with Islam for sure.”

He addressed teachers and suggested them to go beyond their traditional role and become a person who prepares a student to dream big and set greater objectives in life.
