Hyderabad: Telangana Government has decided to appeal the interim stay ordered by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the construction of Kaleshwaram project.
Reacting to the NGT order, Kaleshwaram Project Chief Engineer B. Hariram said that drinking water supply was an important component of the project and the same has been conveyed to the NGT.
He said that the Kaleshwaram project was directly linked to Mission Bhagiratha scheme which aims to provide drinking water to all households. He said no environmental clearances were required for drinking water supply projects.
He said works on providing irrigation water would be started only after getting environmental and forest clearances. However, he said that the government would appeal against the NGT order after it receives the full text of the interim verdict.
The Chief Engineer also informed that the first phase of environmental and forest land clearances and land acquisition for the Kaleshwaram project have already been completed. Public hearing on environmental impact has been completed in 15 project affected districts and also in Maharashtra.
He expressed confidence that the project works would resume soon and drinking water to people in 13 districts and irrigation water to farmers would be supplied from Kaleshwaram project. (INN)
