TS govt to appeal SC to reinstate 61% reservation in Panchayat elections

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K.Chandrashekhar Rao has announced that the interim orders of the High Court that in the Panchayat Raj elections the reservations should not exceed 50% will be appealed in the Supreme Court by the government.

The Chief Minister has decided that the government would appeal to the Supreme Court that the earlier permission of the Supreme Court to implement 61% reservation in Telangana including 34% reservation to the backward classes to be reinstated.

Chief Minister has instructed the cabinet subcommittee to meet on Wednesday and do necessary exercise for filing a petition in Supreme Court.

The Chief Minister suggested that the additional advocate general, as well as all concerned officers, are also to be invited to the cabinet sub-committee meeting and discuss thoroughly the pro’s and con’s of the issue and finalize the strategy to present the argument in the court and the necessity to implement 61%reservation in Telangana Panchayat Raj Institutions.

Chief Minister criticized that the Congress party filed the petition through its party sarpanch Swapna Reddy opposing the 34% reservation for backward classes and thus obstructing reservation for them.

The Chief Minister made it clear that the state government is fully committed to providing 34% reservation to Backward Classes and the necessary legal battle will be fought to achieve this.
