Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with other Congress leaders were arrested by the Warangal Urban police for staging a dharna at Enumamula Market demanding payment of supportive price to chilli farmers.
Speaking to media persons later, Uttam Kumar Reddy condemned Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for not responding to the woes of chilli farmers in the State. He said nearly one lakh chilli farmers have been protesting for the last few weeks for not getting remunerative prices for their produce.
However, he said that the State Government failed to intervene to bail out the affected farmers. He said both TRS Government in the State and BJP Government at the Centre were playing blame game only to avoid payment of supportive price to chilli farmers.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the negligent behaviour of TRS Government was forcing the farmers to resort to extreme steps like suicide. He said KCR shows strong commitment when it comes to misuse of power, irregularities or to encourage defections in other parties.
He said that the Chief Minister should display same wit in resolving the problems being faced by farmers. He demanded that the government directly purchase chilli from farmers by paying Rs. 12,000 per quintal.
He said that the Congress believes in ‘Rythu Rajyam’ and irrespective of whether or not it is in power, the party would fight for the rights of farmers. He threatened to intensify agitation if the State Government failed to intervene on chilli farmers’ issue.
Congress senior leaders including former minister D. Sreedhar Babu and ex-Chief Whip Gandra Venkataramana Reddy also participated in the protest at Enumamula Market.
TRS Leaders Join Congress:
Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, several TRS leaders from Nawabpet mandal of Jadcherla constituency joined the Congress party on Monday evening.
They were inducted into the party at an event held at party headquarters Gandhi Bhavan by the TPCC Chief himself in the presence of TPCC Vice-President Dr. Mallu Ravi and Mahabubnagar DCC President Obaidullah Kotwal. Those who joined the Congress party today include TRS Jadcherla Minority prsident Jalaluddin Baba and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the Congress party was committed towards the welfare of all sections of the society, including minorities. He said that the Chief Minister has failed to fulfill any of the promises that he made during elections.
He said KCR has been trying to divert attention from his failure to provide 2BHK houses, KG to PG free education and non-fulfillment of other poll promises. He said that the TRS Government has not only pushed Telangana into a debt crisis by taking loans indiscriminately, but it was also selling away the State’s assets in different forms.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said people would teach TRS and KCR a fitting lesson by voting Congress party to power in 2019 Assembly elections. (INN)
