India needs growth, not jumlas: Budget 2018-19

Judicious allocation of budget to various schemes was quintessential to required growth in various fronts, said economist Amir Ullah Khan on Monday in Hyderabad.

Speaking on ‘Union Budget 2018-19’ in Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Mr. Khan remarked that the latest budget presented by Arun Jaitely in the Parliament lacked sufficient allocation in critical sectors including health and education.

“This budget was unique in the sense it brought health to limelight, but gave insufficient budgetary allocation,” the CSE Academy director noted in the weekly lecture organized by MANUU Student Union.

He took jibe at the idea of selling pakodas for employment, proposed by Prime Minister Modi, as a jumla that would not solve rising unemployment problem in the country.

“About 10 lakh job aspirants enter market each month i.e. over a crore per year. And we have seen a few lakh new jobs in last couple of years,” the former IAS officer pointed. He added that the situation wasn’t pleasing.

Taking a question from a participant about inflation, Mr. Khan explained that rising prices of TOP i.e. tomatoes, onion and potatoes could be detrimental for political parties.

He revealed how unprecedented rise in onion prices earlier brought governments down. When asked whether doubling of cooking gas prices in the Modi government would do the same, he replied in negative.

Commenting about the lecture, MANUU Student Union president Attaullah Niazi said that it was part of a series of weekly lectures they planned to bring awareness among students about contemporary issues and debates.
