Globalization a new form of colonialism : Asmer Beg

Hyderabad: Globalization was conceived as a new devise to dominate the world after colonialism and imperialism became de-legitimized.

Eminent Scholar from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Prof. M. Asmer Beg expressed this view today while delivering a lecture “Third World Critiques of Globalization” organized by the Department of Political Science, Maulana Azad National Urdu University.

This was the second lecture under the “Hyderabad Dialogue Series”— an initiative involving interaction with leading public intellectuals. The series was jointly launched by the department and Al- Beruni Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy (ACSSEIP) on 13 th March, 2019.

Dr. Afroz Alam, Head, Department chaired the session. Elaborating upon the structures of exploitation in contemporary world, Prof. Beg, a renowned Political Scientist argued that law, knowledge and culture are the three
instruments used by West to perpetuate enslavement and exploitation of the non-Western world for its own interests.

Prof. Beg delved into the conceptual markers of globalization. He elaborated various aspects and manifestations of globalization and presented a comprehensive critique of globalization from the vantage point of the third world.

He elucidated that, how from being an idea, globalization was transformed into “global common sense” and was presented as the panacea and the only choice to address problems in the third world. The lecture was followed by an intense and enriching discussion session.

Dr. Afroz Alam presented his remarks at the end and Ms. Shabana Farheen, Assistant Professor, proposed vote of thanks. Students, research scholars and faculty members attended the lecture
