Osmania University commemorates World Mosquito Day at the historic building

Hyderabad: “Government, policymakers, and academicians need to work together to tackle the mosquito menace and make research in the field of genetic engineering to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases,” said Dr. Anuradha Senior Regional Director Health and Family Welfare Government of India. She was addressing the gathering at Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Parasitology, Osmania University at Begumpet today.

A round table conference on public health concerns and issues was organized jointly by the Institute and Department of Zoology Osmania University to mark the 125th anniversary of the discovery of the link between plasmodium and mosquito in the spreading of malaria. This unprecedented discovery was made by Sir Ronald Ross, a British Medical Surgeon in 1897 while stationed in Secunderabad in the very historic building that houses the institute. This discovery led to the award of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology to Sir Ronald Ross in 1902.

Prof B Reddya Naik Head Department of Zoology and Director SRRIP OU spoke about the activities and informed us about the problematic species of mosquito species. He also shared the information on the planned international conference on vectors, vector-borne diseases and their management to be conducted in December this year.

Dr Amar Singh Naik Additional Director (M&F) & State Programme Officer H&MS explained the need for creating more awareness amongst the public to mitigate mosquito problems in the state.

Dr Ram Babu Chief Entomologist GHMC explained the activities undertaken by the municipal corporation to control mosquitoes and requested the participants to spread the message on the control measures.

Prof B Veeraiah Principal University College of Science appreciated the conduct of the event and applauded the institute and university for preserving the heritage left by Sir Ronald Ross.

A book on mosquitoes authored by Prof M Madhavi of the Zoology department was also released on this occasion.

Prof G Mallesham Dean of Development and UGC Affairs, Prof S Jithender Kumar Naik, Prof M Madhavi chairperson of Board of Studies in Zoology, other faculty members, staff, students, scholars and nursing students from Yashoda College of Nursing participated in this event. (INN)
