TS asks Centre to stop AP’s new irrigation projects

Hyderabad: The Telangana Government on Saturday urged the Centre to restrain Andhra Pradesh Government from the construction of new projects in Godavari and Krishna river basins.

In a letter to Union Ministry of Water Reserouces, TS Govt Special Chief Secretary (Irrigation & CAD Dept) objected to the construction of new projects including Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, Purushothapatnam LIS and Muchumarri Lift irrigation scheme by the AP Government.

Asking the Centre to convene the Apex Council meeting, he also objected to Shivabhasyam LIS, Guru-Raghavendra Lift Irrigation Scheme, Gundrevula Reservoir, LIS Scheme for supplementation of Gajuladinne ayacut, Pulikanuma LIS and Siddapuram LIS describing them as illegal.

The TS Government also clarified that the objections raised by Andhra Pradesh with regard to the Projects Tummilla LIS and Bhakta Ramdas LIS being constructed by Telangana Government were not tenable.

“Tummilla LIS is not a new project but, serving the tail end areas under Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS). Though an allocation of 15.90 TMC was made to this project to serve an ayacut of 87,500 acres, Telangana on an average could utilize only 5.56 TMC irrigating about 25,000 acres.

It will only make good the under utilizations by bridging the huge gap in realisation,” he said. Similarly, the Bhakta Ramadas LIS is not a new project and not serving any new areas in Telangana.

The Scheme is serving the gap ayacut under Nagarjunasagar Left Canal out of the share of Telangana, he said. (INN)
