English is a foreign language for Indians: Prof Prabhakar Babu

English may have become a global language, but it still remains a foreign language for Indians, observed Prof. Prabhakar Babu in an extension lecture at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) today.

“English is a foreign language to us because of its structure”, said the former Dean of Linguistics Dept., EFL University in the lecture at Sayyid Hamid Central Library Auditorium.

Prof. Babu advised student participants to speak a clear and effective language, which requires right pronunciation as well.

Pointing out at delicateness of the language, he said grammatical function of words changes with the change in stress syllable.

“Tone conveys nuances of meaning. Intelligibility improves when right syllable is stressed. It is stress points that make English different from Indian languages,” Prof Babu noted.

The Department of English organized the lecture, informed program coordinator Asst. Prof. G Govindaiah.
