Save Democracy, Says Student Leaders at MANUU

Time has come to save democracy and strengthen it in any ways possible, proclaimed student leaders from across India in an event Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Recalling events happened in recent past under Modi-led BJP government, student leader from Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Meeran Haider asked students and youth to make all possible efforts to save democracy and the country.

He was one among over ten young leaders who gathered in Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) yesterday to share their ideas on “Role of youth in strengthening democracy and minority rights”.

Speaking on the occasion, Hyderabad’s prominent economist Amir Ullah Khan observed that Muslims are not the largest minority in the country in an economic sense.

“India’s biggest minority are women,” he reiterated while adding that the current government did not seem to care much about this minority.

The national level student leaders meet was organized by MANUU Students Union as part of their annual Jashne Bahara program.

The student leaders showed concerns on growing fascism in the country, and indicated how this is threatening the composite culture of the nation.

They also spoke about the growing attacks on the autonomy of central and state universities, and massive cut in the education budget.

MANUU Students Union president Attaullah Niazi urged student activists of every university to unite to strengthen democracy and its institutions.

Notable among prominent student leaders who participated were: Sreerag P. from HCU, Maskoor Ahmed Usmani from AMU, Abul Farah Shazli from AMU, Tahir Jamal from HCU, Fahad Ahmed from TISS, Talib Hussain from Jammu University, Kawalpreet Kaur from Delhi University, Shahadat Hussain from JNU, and Abdullah Asim from MANUU.
