Efforts are on to improve Telangana’s literacy rate: Dy CM

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister (Education) Kadiyam Srihari on Thursday admitted that the Literacy Rate for Telangana was just 66.54% compared to the All India Literacy Rate of 72.98%, as per 2011 Census.

Replying to a question raised by TRS MLC Paturi Sudhakar Reddy during Question Hour in Legislative Council today, the Deputy CM said that the literacy rate in the age group of 07-14 in Telangana was 90.56% compared to 87.92% (All India) and in the age group of 15-24 is 86.97% compared to 86.14% (All India).

Hence, from 07-24 age group, literacy rates are better than All India literacy rates. The main gap is in the age group of 25 years and above, he said.

After the State bifurcation, in 2016-17, the Deputy CM said that a detailed Action Plan was prepared by the Department to involve the students of schools and colleges, self-help groups, NGOs, Corporate sector and local communities etc.,

to cover the non-literates, in a ‘Campaign Mode’ with various activities at the field level, for a continuous period of 100 days. Meanwhile, since Saakshara Bharat Programme is a Centrally Sponsored programme and the Government of India is restructuring the entire programme in the coming financial year, thus based on that and our Action Plans, further action will be taken accordingly, he said.
