TS Govt takes up restoration of 20 city lakes

Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has taken up restoration and comprehensive development of 20 lakes in GHMC, 20 lakes in HMDA and Musi Riverfront Development.

The government has already accorded necessary sanctions and approvals to implement the works immediately.

These projects involve preparatory tasks FTL and buffer fixation notification, enumeration and removal of encroachments.

In some cases as per the existing revenue records some title issues have been noticed in the FTL area.

Similarly there are possibilities of people approaching the courts and prevent the government officials during the efforts to evict and remove the encroachments.

It was felt that a legal preparedness is mandatory to counter the legal battle in various courts to avoid legal complications which would hamper the progress of the projects.

In this connection, a joint meeting with the officials and concerned legal counsels of HMDA and GHMC along with Government Pleaders of Irrigation and Revenue departments was held at Secretariat today.

It was decided that a GO will be issued for protection of lakes and their catchment areas in the State. It was also decided that steps should be taken for constitution of an empowered Lake Protection Authority in the State.

Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar suggested that the government officials shall actively engage with legal experts and prepare a sound strategy to defend the position of the Government.

He said that each lake shall be entrusted to a designated official from GHMC or HMDA for effective monitoring of the projects being undertaken by the Government for protection of the lakes. (INN)
