8 crop varieties approved for release to farmers

Hyderabad: The 2nd State Varietal Release Committee (SVRC)- 2019, in a meeting held at the Telangana Secretariat, on Thursday approved the proposal for release of 8 new varieties of various crops developed by the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU).

The committee had met under the chairmanship of C. Parthasarathi, the APC & Principal Secretary to The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Telangana State and approved the release proposals. The committee had approved of 3 rice varieties and 1 each in sorghum, Redgram, Groundnut, Sesame, and Cotton.

The Director of Research, PJTSAU Dr. R Jagadeeshwar, Director, SRTC Dr. Pradeep, Principal scientists of various crops, Officers from Department of Agriculture, National Seed Corporation, Director TS Seed development corporation and several scientists were attended the committee meeting.

The PJTSAU is striving hard to develop high yielding varieties in different crops for the benefit of Telangana farmers through intensive research and extension. The research is a continuous activity to deal with rectification of defects in existing varieties besides increasing the yield potential or sustainable agriculture.

After formation of Telangana state, the University has released 13 high yielding varieties through 1st SVRC in different crops during the year 2015.

The varieties viz., Telangana Sona, KNM 118, Bathukamma in rice, Karimnagar Makka-1 in maize, PRG-176 in Redgram,WGG 42 in Greengram etc have become very popular in the Telangana and adjoining states.

Similarly, after four years of previous release, again the University has come up with 8 high yielding cultures which were developed and extensively tested in different trials and minikits.

Now these cultures are being proposed for release through 2nd SVRC for the state of Telangana. (INN)
