Mahalakshmi Scheme: 3 crore free tickets for women in 11 days

Hyderabad: The Congress Government’s Mahalakshmi scheme, offering free bus travel for women in Telangana, has witnessed a phenomenal response in its first 11 days.

Over 3 crore free tickets have been issued, translating to an average of 30 lakh women enjoying free rides daily. This impressive figure represents 62% of the total daily ridership of 51 lakh, highlighting the scheme’s significant impact on female bus commuters.

The program has demonstrably boosted RTC bus occupancy rates. From a pre-scheme level of 69%, occupancy has surged to a remarkable 88%. Moreover, several depots like Yadagirigutta, Vemulawada, Dubbaka, and Gajwel achieved 100% occupancy on peak days in December, underscoring the scheme’s popularity.

Concerns have emerged regarding overcrowding and unsafe travel practices on certain routes, particularly during last-trip buses. Passengers are urged to avoid footboard or rear-ladder travel and cooperate with RTC staff during busy hours to prioritize safety.Recognizing the increased demand, the TSRTC plans to add 2,050 new buses in phases over the next 4-5 months. This includes 1,050 diesel buses and 1,000 electric buses, aiming to further enhance capacity and improve public transportation accessibility. (INN)
