Congress to seek MIM’s support in Presidential elections

Hyderabad: The Congress party will be seeking the support of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) in favour of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Meira Kumar in the Presidential elections.

Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the Congress party would urge the MIM to support Meira Kumar’s candidate. However, he did not specify as to how and when the MIM would be approached.

MIM has 9 MLAs, including two from Maharashtra, and one MP and its support would be significant for the UPA.

It may be mentioned that the MIM and Congress party were allies from 2004 to November 2012. While the MIM went closer to TRS after 2014 elections, its relations with the Congress party turned sore during GHMC elections held in January 2016 after the latter launched a full-fledged campaign in the Old City to defeat MIM.

Uttam Kumar Reddy also informed that UPA’s Presidential candidate Meira Kumar would visit Hyderabad on July 3 to meet and interact with leaders of Congress and other parties. (INN)
