GHMC chief reviews condition of roads post recent rains

Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy reviewed today with CE (M), CE (P) & SE (QC), the road conditions of the city post recent rains.

There are a total of 9,389 lane Km of BT roads in the city which has to be periodically maintained as a preventive measure every five years. The 20% of which i.e., 1878 lane Km has to be re-carpeted every year which needs Rs. 488.28 Crore.

Arrangements are being made for financial assistance to a tune of Rs. 500.00 Crs this year, so that at least 1878 lane Kms of BT roads can be re-carpeted thoroughly, the GHMC Commissioner said.

Due to continuous recent rains, the roads which were laid long back got damaged at certain places and the same are being identified. So far, 7.89 Lakhs sq mtrs of road area is identified at 1846 locations which need special repairs at a cost of Rs. 77.79 crore.

During rainy season, hot mix plants will be shutdown due to perennial wet conditions as road laid during monsoon at wet surface will not last long. Therefore, the tender process for these special repairs will be completed in the meantime and works shall be taken up immediately after complete recede of rains, Janardhan Reddy said.

Last year road repairs after rains were taken up at 411 locations at a cost of Rs.62 crore. During the month of July / August 2017, road repair works taken up at 148 locations with a cost of Rs. 19.51 Crs of which first layer of road repair (DBM) completed and final layer will be taken up after complete recede of rains.

Last year 218 water stagnation points are rectified. This year 346 water stagnation points (Road Vulnerable Points) are identified and categorized as short term, medium term and long term and all of them require Rs. 121.00 Crs. The process of sanction and execution will be completed before next monsoon.

A total of 13 chronic and major water logging points which require remodeling of drains will be taken up before next monsoon at a cost of Rs.61.67 crore, the Commissioner informed. (INN)
