Hyderabad: Telagana State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Private Universities Bill – 2018.
The Bill, introduced by Deputy Chief Minister (Education) Kadiyam Srihari was passed by a voice vote after opposition parties BJP, TDP and CPI (M) staged a walk out demanding that the Bill be referred to a Select Committee.
MIM supported the Bill although its floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi demanded inclusion of the ‘Minority University’ in the Bill. The Deputy CM assured the MIM leader that the government would permit setting up private minorities’ universities in the State.
“In the present scenario of global competition and an economy deeply linked to other countries in the world, the need of developing our youth and students with globally competitive capabilities required setting up of world class universities in the State,” the Deputy CM said while explaining the objects and reasons for introducing the Bill.
The Bill, he said, would provide for establishment and incorporation of private universities in Telangana with emphasis on qualitative, research oriented, industry relevant and World Class Higher Education.
He pointed out of 29 States, except three States of Goa, Jammu & Kashmir and Kerela, all others have permitted setting up of Private Universities.
He said even neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has given nod for private universities in 2016 and nearly 11 universities were being set up there.
Kadiam clarified that allowing private universities does not mean that government institutions would be ignored. He said presently there were 11 universities in Telangana and after coming to power in 2014, TRS Government has filled 1528 posts and also cleared recruitments on 1061 other posts in those universities.
