Hyderabad to celebrate Padmashri Aziz Warsi’s centenary with Qawwali

Hyderabad’s noted qawwals Warsi brothers are organizing a mehfil-e-qawwali at Ravindra Bharathi Auditorium on Saturday, August 3.

Congress leader Shujath Ali ‘Sufi’, who is scheduled to preside over the event, told Hyderabad Youth Mirror that it is being organized as part of centenary celebration of Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi.

“If qawwali as an art form is still relevant in the Deccan, it is due to Late Aziz Warsi. In the Saturday program, his third generation will perform in Ravindra Bharathi,” he informed.

In the world of Qawwali in India, Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi is the only Qawwal to have received the honor and title of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award given by the Indian government.

His grandsons Nazeer Warsi and Nasir Warsi jointly received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for their contribution to Qawwali. They are scheduled to perform on August 3 at 7pm. Earlier, they performed on Shaz Tamkanat’s 84th birth anniversary in Lamakaan.

The program to mark Aziz Warsi’s centenary is organized by Hyderabad Arts & Cultural Association (HACA) in association with Indian Council of Cultural Relations and Department of Language & Culture, Govt. of Telangana.
