Opportunity to visit Ocean Laboratories in Hyderabad on June 5

Hyderabad: World Environment Day celebrated every year on 5 June since 1973, is described as “a global platform for inspiring positive change” led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is now the largest global environmental event, with millions of people in more than 150 countries including India participating to protect the planet.

The idea to celebrate this day is to engage “governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities, and communities in raising awareness related to the environment and how to protect it”. This year’s World Environment Day is special as it marks 50 years of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972. The 1972 Stockholm Conference is the first international meeting on the environment and spurred the formation of environment ministries and agencies around the world including the formation of UNEP. Every year World Environment Day is hosted by a different country, in which official celebrations take place. World Environment Day for 2022 is hosted by Sweden. This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Only One Earth”. It focuses on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.On this occasion, INCOIS too will celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June as Open Day. As a part of this, students and citizens are welcome to visit the INCOIS facilities and various labs from 10 AM to 1 PM. The visitors will have the opportunity to interact with scientists who will give a comprehensive overview of INCOIS activities and how they will help in better understanding our environment. (INN)
