Congress demands compensation for those killed in bank queues

Hyderabad: Leader of Opposition K. Jana Reddy on Friday demanded that the government pay compensation to those who were killed while standing in bank and ATM queues after the Central Government implemented demonitisation of old currency notes.

Participating in the short discussion on the issue in Telangana State Legislative Assembly, Jana Reddy described the demonitisation move as totally irresponsible.

He said that the Income Tax Department should have provided an opportunity to the people to disclose unaccounted money.

However, the decision to ban Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 was taken in a haste which consequently created lot of problems for everyone.

He said as against the claims of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of restoring normalcy within 50 days, he said that the present chaos would continue for at least six more months.

Jana Reddy said that the implementation of cashless or digital economy was not so easy as being projected by the Central and State Governments.

He said that people needs to be trained in using e-transactions which is not possible in a country with a huge percentage of illiterate persons. (INN)
