Oxford Launches English-English-Urdu Dictionary at Urdu Book Fair in Hyderabad

Comprising over 52,000 entries, 200 illustrations and a DVD, the English-English-Urdu dictionary will facilitate easy learning for bilingual learners. – Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press (OUP), the world’s largest University Press launched the ‘English-English-Urdu Dictionary’ (first edition)at the 19th All India Urdu Book Fair in Hyderabad. The bilingual dictionary, which has been specially designed for learners of English language, teachers, translators and general readers, was unveiled by Mohammad Mahmood Ali, the Deputy Chief Minister of  Telangana.

Also present at the launch event were Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi, Hon’ble Member of Parliament and Dr. Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz, Vice Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad.

The English-English-Urdu Dictionary has been translated and edited by empanelled experts of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language. The dictionary contains more than 52,000 entries, related phrases, idioms and over 200 illustrations that will provide a comprehensive guide for speakers and learners of Urdu to read, learn, and converse fluently in English.

This English-English Urdu dictionary has incorporated contemporary English words like ‘citizen journalism’, ‘e-learning’, and ‘newsworthy’ and provides detailed explanations and pronunciation guides to help learners grasp and understand the correct usage of these words.

The dictionary has a companion DVD that has the complete word list of the dictionary and the audio of almost all the headwords and derivatives in the dictionary, which acts as a pronunciation guide. Dictionary users will also be able to type and search words in Urdu from the DVD content.
