Assam sits on tip of volcano: ex-IG Darapuri on NRC Issue

Former Inspector General of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police S R Darapuri expressed concern that all was not well with National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Speaking during Hyderabad release of fact finding report on NRC issue, Darapuri said Assam was sitting on the tip of a volcano that could erupt if the injustices meted out to Bangla-speaking Muslims and Hindus on the basis of language and religion in the process of updating NRC were not checked and stopped in time.

First tabled in Parliament on July 15, 2016, the NRC and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is backed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

With the final draft of the Bill scheduled to be out by July 30, around 35 lakhs of people will be rendered stateless and there was apparently no plan what was to be done to them, said Darapuri.

Deporting such a huge number of people appears to be practically impossible. If it happens, it will create a crisis rather, an anarchy, apprehends people behind United Against Hate.

Deployment of additional security forces was an indication to the upcoming chaotic situation, they pointed out while noting that the government, authorities and other stake holders must act before it was too late.

There are six detention camps which were not separate camps but a part of district jail. There were approximately 1,000 people in the detention camps in Tezpur, Silchar, Jorhat, Goalpara, Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar (only for women), the fact finding report reveals.

The inmates have no prison rights;
Most affected are allegedly Bengali-speaking Hindus and Muslims. Presumably, the NRC process was directly having an impact on specifically religious and linguistic minorities in the state, the report noted.

The team #UnitedAgainstHate headed by Darapuri went to Assam and prepared the fact finding report on NRC issue, which was released today at NSS Press Club in Hyderguda, Hyderabad.

Senior Journalists Amit Sengupta, Tariq Anwar, Manisha Bhalla, Avinash Kumar and Hassnul Banna were also a part of team.

Team has noticed many cases of discrimination, Violations of Human Rights, Lack of Judicial accountability. All these cases with complete details were mentioned in the report.
