Script is nucleus of a film, says producer Aliza Khan

Film making is a complex process involving various skills, people and tools. Among all its components, script stands out as a nucleus of a film, remarked producer Aliza Khan on Tuesday.

Speaking on ‘Cinematic Arts and Film Theory’, Ms Khan pondered when many persons involve in making a film, why director reserves discretionary right in all matters.

In her talk at the Department of English in Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), she deliberated on adaption with specific reference to Jane Eyre’s two famous novels ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Ang Lee directed adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ has the same title, while Gurinder Chada’s adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ has been titled ‘Bride and Prejudice’.

When asked about what makes a film adaptation ‘faithful’, she noted that film adaption of a literary work could be faithful provided it retains story, sequence of events and tone.

On a following question from audience whether she considers ‘Haider’ a faithful adaption, she that the makers of the film retained original themes, remained true to its narrative but changed the context.

Ms Khan worked with team Bahubali on marketing of the film and she is associated with Sikhya Entertainment, informed Dr Sami Siddiqui, convener of the guest lecture.
